José Luis García-López produced, quite simply, one of the all-time great Jokers, and I’ve never met anyone who read this era and didn’t remember this classic birthday cake cover, now reimagined by Rick Celis in his trademark style after Batman the Animated Series. Joker’s hostage taking to bring Batman to the scene is one of his familiar moves, so of course he tries it in Cat-Tales, successfully and not, perhaps never so relentlessly as Don’t Fear the Joker.
