Batman
Batman is The Dark Knight. Batman is the Caped Crusader. Batman
is the Guardian of Gotham.
But Batman is also Bruce Wayne. Those who say "Bruce Wayne is the
mask" betray a total lack of understanding, of Batman, of heroes, and of
storytelling.
The story of Batman is the story of Bruce Wayne.
He is a man with all the emotions,
dimension, sensations and passions of a man.
The Dark Knight Rises opened July 20, 2012, and while we all hoped it
would set the record straight and give us the real Bruce Wayne, the hero we
deserve in every sense, it showed us a Bruce who had no commitment to his mission, who was Batman
for a few years at most and gave it up. A Selina whose anger, bitterness
and insulting lower class origin missed the point of all the character is
and should be. At least Chris Dee's Cat-Tales remained to set the
record straight giving us a Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle worthy of being called Batman and Catwoman,
and worthy of each other.
"In
creating Cat-Tales, Chris Dee breathed life into the motivations,
personalities, and relationships of Selina, Bruce and countless
other characters. She effectively transformed them from
two-dimensional figments of the imagination that could be considered
and dismissed at will to three-dimensional people who readers could
care about and love. Second, she created a world where these people
were respected. They were allowed to grow and evolve in a manner
that was true to their character and their essence, rather than
forced and restricted into a role dictated by arbitrary mindsets or
the latest fad."
