A particular irony of the debate over Catwoman’s costume is the head-to-toe black of cartoon burglars that critics of the purple Catwoman prefer, is the worst choice possible from the “practical” standard they consider all-important. Cities are bright, and a figure in black leaves a perfect person-shaped silhouette far easier to spot than the Balent costume, purple broken up by black opera-length gloves and thigh-high boots reads as anything but a human shape. Silhouette being an important aspect of sneak-thieving, it’s surprising that it wasn’t addressed while Selina was instructing Doris or Bruce but in her internal monologue in, of all places, the wedding tale Ever Fixed.
